Turf Haven: Beneficial Services
Core Aeration Over-Seed:
A core aeration over-seeding is recommended annually for newer lawns, and is a very popular service, especially if your lawn has areas with warm season grasses. The core aeration removes thousands of tiny plugs “cores” from your turf. This allows water and nutrients to reach the root zone. The outcome is a healthier growing environment for your lawn. (If you cannot easily push a screwdriver into your soil, the soil is too hard for air and water to reach the roots.) After the core aeration, the over-seeding takes place. These fresh, tiny turf grass seeds will flourish in this environment. Core aeration over-seeding is necessary for homeowners if they wish to have a greener lawn when their warm season grasses enter dormancy. It’s also necessary if you want to repair any damage that has occurred in your lawn from the harsh Carolina summer climate.
Grub Control:
This treatment is used to control the damage caused by grubs. The product is a dry granular product that is watered in and controls the grubs by contact. This is a “quick fix” for emergency situations. A systemic control will be recommended for complete control of these damaging pests.
Systemic Grub Control:
This application of grub control is recommended because it controls grubs for the entire season. Systemic grub control is absorbed into the grass roots; it’s like getting a shot to prevent an illness. Once the grubs feed on the turf roots, they quickly lose their appetite and stop their destructive damage. Without a reliable food source, grubs quickly weaken and disappear from your lawn.
Surface Insect Control:
There are many species of turf damaging insects that feed directly upon the leaf tissue “blades” of the turf plant. In most cases, these insects are already in the lawn, but do not cause severe damage. A properly watered lawn reduces insect invasion. Newer lawns and lawns under stress are the ones that will receive damage if left untreated. A surface insect control will give your lawn the help it needs to thrive. For many customers, this is a “favorite” application to help protect their pets from fleas & ticks and the diseases that they can transmit.
Fungicide Treatments:
Your lawn may become a host to a variety of fungi. Hot, moist, humid conditions give these pathogen pests a cozy environment. Lawns that have become “stressed” from inadequate watering and/or mowing too short or not often enough with a dull mower blade, are the most susceptible to Brown Patch disease. Turf fungicide applications are a very effective way to aid in the recovery of disease because they suppress the pathogen. Your lawn care specialist will recommend fungicide treatments when necessary.
Lime applications:
These treatments are used to “sweeten” the soil when it has been determined that the composition is too acidic. Acidic soil (which is common for clay) prevents the grass plants from being able to utilize the important micronutrients in the soil, and the fertilizer that is applied. Without the capability to use the fertilizer and nutrients, turf grass root development and growth is inhibited, and the grass may appear thin and yellow. Lime applications lower the acidity so you can enjoy your lawn’s healthy color, height, and density.
